Tu Tengyao is already a well-known name among the Wing Chun community all over the world. Famous in his sector for years in China, he has also captured a lot of attention in Europe and United States too.

This man needs no presentation anymore. In fact, by now almost every Wing Chun practitioner, or just a passionate, has seen at least one of his famous videos. Easily recognizable by the almost always same template and colors, he records himself in his school in Southern China.

As you can imagine, he gained a lot of attention and it’s hard to say if positive or negative. However, the Wing Chun community alone has reacted pretty positively I’d say. Tu has brought back a more aggressive and determined perspective of Wing Chun. In fact, this martial art is, unfortunately, regarded by many people as a soft and traditional ensemble of movements and some chain punches. The true essence of Wing Chun couldn’t be farther away from being lazy and full of useless movements. Somebody refers to Wing Chun as Chinese boxing.

The beauty of his approach lies exactly in bringing back the aggressive, effective, simple, and yet very elegant essence of this incredible martial art, restoring its dignity. I wouldn’t say that he’s proposing a new version of Wing Chun, but rather repurposing the original way it was designed. Wong Shun Leung, one of the best Yip Man’s students, used to be known as the King of Talking Hands. He would put his Wing Chun to the test directly where he needed it the most, in the streets. Additionally, in the last weeks, his videos have been spreading across western martial arts fans with growing speed.

But that’s not all, in 2015 Tu was given the responsibility to train an entire college filled with 20.000 students. Until then, China was mainly focused on Taekwondo for their Counter-terrorist training. However, seven years ago they decided on another strategy, and Tu was chosen to train the College attendants.
Students trained Wing Chun weekly under the advice of the College in order to strengthen their self-defence skills.

Tu’s entry into the western scene was somehow predictable: bog enthusiasm, on one hand, great scepticism on the other.

The videos he uploads are mainly him training with his students. And of course, this fact also seems to be a primary argument of the more sceptical part of the audience. In fact, many have questioned his skills since there are only videos of him training in a safe school environment, not in the ring or in a real fight.

In Conclusion

The point is that only time will tell the truth, as it always does. And from a very personal point of view, I’d say that Wing Chun has many other characters and «Masters» who do much worse and depict Wing Chun as a Tai Chi style or whatever.
If only one of the thousands of keyboard warriors would actually challenge him personally for a fight, instead of from behind their desktops — who knows? Maybe the truth would be already out there.

Let’s start with the introduction. Tu Teng Yao is the master of Wing Chun and is currently the influencer of it. He is from southwest China and is currently the head of the Chongqing Wing Chun Association. Now people would say that he is the descendant of Yip Man. But no one knows if he is for real a Yip man son or pupil. But I have a fact which will make sure that he is not the Junior Yip man. But the question remains:

Technically no. The reason is that Yip Man is now 90 years old, and what is the age of Tu Teng Yao? It is around 30. Now, this is a very huge age difference. That means when Tu Teng was born Yip man was nearly 60 years old. So, he is not related to him.

There were rumors in 2014 that China is training its flight attendants to kick off some on-flight drunks and even terrorists. That wasn’t a rumor at all. In 2014, Southwest airline college signed a deal with the Wing Chun master Tu Teng. That he would train their flight attendants to the best of Wing Chun.

The Airline college added that Wing Chun is a very good close-combat martial arts, and it will be best in the airplane’s confined places. If you were to ask me: was it for good or not? Well, it should be supposedly good, right? I mean, if someone hijacks a plane in the worst cases.
